Year Three - 10 More Halloween Movie Recommendations

Posted by:  /  Category: Ex-Girlfriends

hot exgirlfriend

As we look out our windows, we can now see the leaves beginning to change color and slowly falling from the tree. Ah, yes, a sure sign of autumn. Summer clothes are being put away and jackets are coming out of the closet. For weeks now stores have had their Halloween decorations up and bags of candy on the shelves.

With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, there is a good chance families or friends in groups or teenagers by themselves will be staying up later then normal looking for a good scary movie to watch in the dark. For the last two years I have written two articles recommending “unconventional” horror movies to watch at the perfect time of year and the response has been strong each year. By “unconventional” I mean not the standard movies that most will be watching such as Halloween, The Exorcist, Friday The 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street or The Blair Witch Project but films that may not be seen as often but are worthy of watching and scary in their own right.

So this year I am back with a new list of 10 films I recommend to watch this month to get you into that proper mood. Most of these films are for adults but more mature teens can probably handle it. I have also included a classic for the whole family. I hope you enjoy the list and take me up on one or two this month. If you do feel free to drop me a note and let me know your thoughts.

Here is the list in alphabetical order with an age recommendation at the end of each.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948 - Director: Charles Barton). When I was a kid growing up in Gary, Indiana this was a Halloween staple every year on one of the local channels. For some reason it seems to be shown far more often at other times of the year but I think this classic comedy/horror film is a must see at Halloween. The classic comedy team of that era is teamed up to fight the classic horror movie monsters in Universal Pictures arsenal. The story is simple. Lou Costello plays Wilbur, a baggage handler whose affections are returned by the seductive Sandra unaware she is working with Count Dracula to take Wilbur’s brain and put it into the Frankenstein monster. Bud Abbott is Lou’s best friend (naturally)/co-worker who never seems to see the terrifying things Wilbur sees. Lon Chaney Jr. comes along for the ride as the Wolf Man along with Bela Lugosi and Glenn Strange as Dracula and the monster, respectively. And let’s not forget a great cameo by Vincent Price at the end. This film is made for the whole family. Kids should be delighted by the mixture of laughs and chills while teens and adults will be more entertained by the witty dialogue, unusual for an A&C film. This is their best effort by far and one that should be enjoyed every October.

CREEPSHOW (1982 - Director: George A Romero). Night of the Living Dead director Romero teamed for the first time with horror novelist Stephen King to create an anthology film of five short stories. Each one is separate from the others and a few generate some genuine chills. The first story tells of a family that reunites on Father’s day to celebrate the life of a man not so loved but who makes a surprise appearance to exact some revenge. Story two stars King as a hillbilly who witnesses a meteor crash and goes to investigate, foolishly touching the meteor which leads to dramatic circumstances. Story three stars Leslie Nielsen and Ted Danson in the story of a husband’s unique revenge against his wife and lover and how sweet revenge can be made even from the grave. Story four stars Hal Holbrook and Fritz Weaver as college professors at a University where an old crate with something frightening inside awaits under some stairs. The last story stars E.G. Marshall as a Howard Hughes type man who lives in a silo-like condo afraid of germs and bugs and how a certain set of critters take revenge. Overall the film is enjoyable (with an eerie opening scene featuring King’s real life son) with some stories working better then others. King’s is the only one that isn’t scary while the others provide a few jolts. It’s not great but worth checking out. The film is rated R for violence and language but older teens can probably handle it.

DRACULA (1979 - Director: John Badham) I’ve picked this adaption of Bram Stoker’s classic novel because it seems to be the most forgotten of them all. In 1979 it was released along with a full slate of other films over the summer and not in the fall where this classy film belonged and died at the box office and has since languished in seeming obscurity. John Badham’s stylish version is more a romantic take on the Dracula legend with Frank Langella starring as perhaps the sexiest Count ever to grace the screen. Kate Nelligan makes an impressive debut as Lucy, the object of the Count’s desires. An impressive supporting cast is headed by Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing and Donald Pleasance. The film has a few creepy moments but I wouldn’t call it scary. It’s more interested in elegance then eeriness. Composer John Williams contributes one of his best and most underrated musical scores. The film is rated R for some violence and smaller children may be bothered by it. Everyone else should allow themselves to be entranced and taken into this world under the capable hands of Williams, Olivier, Langella and Badham.

FREAKS (1932 - Director: Tod Browning). One of the most disturbing films I have ever seen in this classic film from the director of the original Dracula about a travelling circus and its unusual inhabitants. The main story revolves around a little person who becomes completely entranced with a woman performer who uses him for money and laughs at him behind his back. Nothing is quite as eerie as the dwarf’s face whenever someone speaks unkindly about or to the woman including the man she is really in love with. Browning cast his film with real life circus freaks and their authenticity only adds to the true eeriness of the film. The final scenes will have you on the edge of your seat as you will be both disturbed and uncomfortable. The film was a flop at the time and Browning was basically ruined but the film became a cult hit in the 60’s and has grown is status ever since. Though not rated I recommend it for older teens on up. Children will be rightfully frightened by it.

FRIGHT NIGHT (1985 - Director: Tom Holland) Writer/Director Holland has fashioned a modern day vampire story with plenty of excitement, scares and laughs to entertain everyone. William Ragsdale stars as Charlie Brewster, a hormone filled teenager who one day begins to believe that his new next door neighbor is a vampire. Chris Sarandon is terrific as Jerry Dandridge, the charismatic and sexy neighbor who wouldn’t dare come into Charlie’s house even after discovering Charlie’s suspicions - that is until Charlie’s mother invites him over. Ragsdale, whose best friend and girlfriend don’t believe him, runs to Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), the host of a local horror movie show, for help but finds that the “vampire hunter extraordinaire” doesn’t believe in vampires anymore then anyone else. From then on it’s a race to see if Dandridge can kill Charlie before Charlie gets people to believe him and help destroy Dandridge. Fright Night is probably the best vampire film in the last twenty years - certainly the most entertaining. You’ll laugh one minute and then scream the next thanks to Holland’s witty script and tight direction. It even inspired a 1989 sequel which isn’t too bad of a film on its own right. The film is rated R but only small children should avoid it. Most of the violence is implied and this is a film everyone will have a good time at.

THE HOWLING (1981 - Director: Joe Dante). The first of three werewolf movies (the other two being An American Werewolf in London and Wolfen) to be released in 1981 and the most entertaining of the three. Dee Wallace stars as a television news reporter who, along with her fiancé, getaway to a weekend retreat for some relaxation only to discover that they are smack dab in the middle of a werewolf colony. Director Dante has plenty of joy for true horror film buffs (many characters are named after horror movie directors) and appearances by such greats as Patrick McNee, John Carradine, Slim Pickens and Kevin McCarthy. The film’s lone transformation scene is very impressive (though I prefer the scene from American Werewolf) and the suspense level is on high once they get into the woods. The Howling is not a great film but belongs in the upper echelon of werewolf movies. The film is properly rated R for plenty of violence and nudity including a super sexy lovemaking scene beside a campfire between a she-wolf and her newest victim. I would keep the kids away from this one.

THE NIGHT STALKER (1971 - Director: Dan Curtis). The only film in any of my lists over the three years that was not released theatrically is this television pilot movie starring Darren McGavin as a nosy reporter who begins to piece together a series of murders in Las Vegas that appear to have been committed by a vampire. This was the pilot for the cult series of the same name with McGavin as Carl Kolchak who, week in and week out, investigated a series of deaths that weren’t natural. An obvious precursor to The X-Files, Stalker is a tense and exciting but sadly short television movie which was the highest rated television movie of all time up to that point. So popular was it that an even better sequel, The Night Strangler, was made the next year and followed Kolchak as he chased after a modern day Jack the Ripper. The two movies were released in one DVD and I strongly recommend you getting both films as the running time for each are brief enough to be one somewhat longer then average theatrical movie. As it was made for television the films are suitable for everyone but my scare the young ones.

RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975 - Director: Jack Starrett). This film is less horror then action-thriller but its themes lean that way so I have included it. Peter Fonda and Warren Oates play friends who, with their wives, get a camper and hit the road for a two week vacation. Unfortunately on the very first night the two men are witness to a human sacrifice during a devil worship ceremony and are spotted and chased the rest of the film. This was a B-movie drive-in release in 1975 that was a surprise hit and it’s easy to see why with exciting car chases and a couple of genuinely chilling moments including a terrific scene involving rattle snakes. The ending, unsatisfying to some, is very creepy. Credit director Starrett for keeping the action moving and introducing enough characters to wonder who is good and who isn’t.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985 - Director: Dan O’Bannon). From one of the writer’s of Alien comes this zombie horror film that is refreshingly funny much of the time. This is not a spoof like Airplane! but a horror film that refuses to take itself seriously. James Karen and Thom Mathews score loads of laughs as medical supply workers (Mathews is on his first day and Karen is showing him the ropes) who unwittingly unleash a gas in the air which will bring the dead back to life. Clu Gullager plays their boss sees only financial ruin before seeing the dead come back to life. Meanwhile a group of kids party in the cemetery until the unwanted guests begin crawling out of their graves and everyone involved ends up at the morgue next door where the mortician tries to help save the day. The film is filled with loads of one liners but is also bloody enough to remind horror fans it is not a flat out comedy. My favorite line? As an exasperated Gullager tries to figure out what to do when a zombie has come to life he suggests that they have to kill it. Freddy, the new kid, asks how do you kill something that’s dead? Karen turns to Gullager and responds, “That’s not a bad question Burt.” The more I see this film the better it gets maybe because the first time I saw it I thought it was a straight horror film. It’s clever and well written and performed. It’s R rating is proper for loads of violence and some nudity and language.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004 - Director: Edgar Wright). This is a very funny British horror/comedy with Simon Pegg (hilarious) as Shaun, a young man going nowhere fast in life whose girlfriend dumps him and his job at an electronics store seems endless. He lives with two other guys, one (Nick Frost) who prefers to sit on the couch playing video games. So dull is Shaun’s life that his daily routine of walking to the local corner store never changes including tripping over the same curb. One day on his journey he fails to notice that everyone around him is a zombie and, in fact, makes it almost home without realizing it. Once he does he gathers his friend, mother, girlfriend (or ex-girlfriend as she reminds him) and her friends and head off to a hopeful road of survival. Pegg, who co-wrote the script with director Wright, is funny when doing absolutely nothing and the script is filled with zombie references from many other movies to keep any movie buff on his toes. But it also has the usual dry but funny British humor we Americans have grown accustomed to. Who wouldn’t smile when in a moment of panic, while locked in a pub, the jukebox roars to life thus giving away our heroes’ hiding spot to the zombies. Shaun immediately orders, “Kill the Queen,” to which everyone stops cold and he has to correct himself. The film is properly R-rated for extreme violence and is not recommended for children.
