A debut album that defies all expectations, Waves and the Both of Us definitely breaks the mold.

The very first song, “Losing Sleep,” lets you know that you are in for something different. Don’t expect a typical debut pop album; you will be sorely disappointed to go into this record thinking you’ll find an over-processed tart devoid of real talent. The first song hooks you at the chorus, it’s sing-along material. The bridge, however, is what stuck out to me.

The enchanting Charlotte (not the singer’s real name) has her own way of vocalizing, often with a differentiated enunciation of words. The twelve tracks were co-written by the New Jersey native, five of which she wrote entirely alone.

Her single, “How I Could Just A Kill a Man,” is a track that will have you humming along after a single listen. It’s a little more complicated than your average pop chart single.

The title track is an exploration of infatuation and provides a unique perspective on a sexual relationship without using explicit language or details. The percussion is entrancing and holds the elements of the song together. It’s sweeping melody and utterly modern style makes it aurally appealing.

“Sweet Valium High,” one of my favorite tracks, opens like a piano-based dance anthem but proves to be something altruistically opposite; quite possibly a take on unconditional and conditional love scenarios.

The fifth track, “Ex-Girlfriend Syndrome,” shares her insecurity and unwillingness to let go of an ex. She tells a tale of being in his home and knowing she should go, but chooses to stay. The beat is catchy; melody and rhythm harmonize well in this song.

In case it isn’t already obvious, Charlotte shows her aggressiveness and refusal to be ignored in “AEIOU,” this song flows like a soft rap track. She begs her lover to quit teasing and back his talk up with action. What could be my favorite line from the album is straight out of this track: “You say ‘I see myself in you/but you ain’t hittin’ nothin’ with your woe,” she bantars.

“Toy Soldier” is another of my favorites, an can be taken any which way you please. Literally, it might seem a little gross. She claims to have moved on at first, but later admits she wants her toy soldier back, she says, “let’s fake romance and I’ll be someone else.”

While not the most stellar track, “This Is Only For Now” has in originality what it lacks in purpose. It is melodically interesting but doesn’t seem to have a place in the flow of the album. Is quite a nice answer to the definition of “filler track”!

“In Your Apartment” shows a new direction of inspiration, with a big-band feeling coarsing through its veins. This track is a modified brand of retro-band pop that fits in with the rest of the album and shows the maturation of this new artist’s tastes and musical abilities. Horns and trumpets accent this excellently vocalized track. (Can you tell it’s another of my favorites?)

“Army Men” is another so-so track. The headlining quote on the album art is from this. “In the absence of gratitude we all feel alone,” while a beautiful sentiment, does not constitute acceptable song lyrics.

My absolute favorite song from the album is this bare acoustic fare, “Build the Moon.” Showing a deeper and slightly darker angle of Charlotte Sometimes, the track showcases her ability to use music to tell a story. A needy Charlotte desperately begs a lover to tell her she is loved.

A finale of reflection and self-mourning, “Pilot” is an interesting way to end a project, with its lyrics boasting: “Remember what I’m drinking’s cheap and I’m a pilot and I am steering deep.”

This album is a surprising and well-crafted feast, well worth multiple playings and only gets better with each listen.
